Methyl Glucoside (MeG) is a non-ionic organic compound. It can be used as main ingredient in the drilling mud called “MeG drilling mud”. Such drilling mud is featured by low toxicity, bio-degradability, non-fluorescence, good lubricity and strong shale inhibition. MEG drilling mud is environmental friendly, and is regarded as “green material for the drilling mud”.
MeG drilling mud usually is composed of MeG (30% to 50%), xanthan gum, CMS (carboxymethyl starch), barite and small amount of other performance improvers. Sea water can be directly employed as base water to prepare such drilling mud.
Since MeG drilling mud is strongly inhibitive and has good lubricity, it is an ideal drilling mud system to drill horizontal wells and highly-deviated wells, or when shale control inhibition is needed during drilling operation.
